Sien with Child on her Lap
This piece was done in 1882. It depicts Van Gogh's mistress Sien with a child placed on her lap. Van Gogh met Sien in January of 1882, she was a prostitute who had been abandoned by the father of the child she was carrying. He took her in as a model for his art despite both his family and supporters lack of approval. I chose this drawing at first because I liked the shading, after hearing about Sien and her backstory I found I enjoyed the series of works that feature her even more.
